DIY: Vintage-chic buttonhole

How to make bang on-trend buttonholes for your wedding party

When it comes to creating the perfect wedding, the devil is in the detail. So, where the not-so small matter of buttonholes is concerned, the humble carnation simply no longer cuts it.

Vintage Chic Trend

Whether it’s a hipster city wedding or a bohemian rural affair you’re planning, ‘vintage’ and ‘rustic’ are this summer’s buttonhole buzzwords – and the good news is they’re a cinch to make.

Buttonhole Design

Rather than opting for a single flower head, the key is to use a small cluster of flowers, foliage and herbs, loosely hand-tied with an informal, freshly-picked-from-the garden feel, like this boho-buttonhole at Rock My Wedding.

To make your vintage buttonhole…

What you need:

  • A small cluster of flowers and herbs* (max. 3 varieties)
  • Florists’ tape
  • Florists’ wire
  • Twine
  • Pearl pin

*we love quintessentially English flowers and herbs, such as thistles, daisies, cowslips, wax flowers, lavender, caspedia and rosemary.

How to make it:

1. Trim your flowers and foliage to the desired length (cut your ‘star’ flower a little shorter as this will sit in front).

2. Arrange them with the smallest flower at the front.

3. Wrap the florists’ wire around the middle of the stems, about an inch wide.

4. Cover the wire with tape.

5. Wrap the wire with the twine, securing at the front with a bow or at the side with a knot.

6. Keep your buttonholes in a small amount of water until they’re ready to be attached.
