Annett Kuhlmann talks about her fascination with floral photography

In Expose #04 we introduce the trendsetting Berlin florist Annett Kuhlmann. In the video portrait she explains that she is not just a florist with Marsano Blumen, but also a photographer. We asked Annett why she finds photographing flowers so fascinating:

“Photographing flowers is magical because of everything it involves: the fragrance, the beauty of transience, the strength and vulnerability at the same time, the changes, the moment. The flower is doomed to die from the moment that it’s cut," says Annett.

Combined worlds

Annett likes to combine different worlds. She therefore regularly photographs fashion in conjunction with flowers, such as her work for Esther Perbandt, a Berlin unisex fashion label.

Two photography tips from Annett

  1. Flowers have many different shapes, layers and dimensions which are very interesting from a technical photographic perspective. You should therefore pay close attention to what you focus on in the image and which objects you want out of focus (balance between focus/depth of field) in order to make the image as interesting as possible.
  2. Light is incredibly important. Think carefully about what atmosphere you want to create in the images and what light you need for this. The lighting can make the image hard and cold, or soft and warm. If you have no artificial light, it is therefore important to keep a close eye on the natural light and to anticipate what it can do. Flowers also allow you to include fantastic shadowplay in your image.
