Mantel decorating with fresh flowers

Give your fireplace a new lease of life this summer

In the winter evenings, nothing beats staring into the vivid orange flames of a roaring fire. But your fireplace can still be a warm and vibrant focal point right the way through the spring and summer months thanks to these fresh-flower mantelpiece displays.

From minimalist chic and classic elegance to the perfect arrangement for a special occasion, here are some of our favourite design ideas and mantel-friendly blooms for your inspiration.

Wake up and smell the flowers…

Give a small bedroom mantelpiece a fresh, summer feel with pink tulips in vintage jars and bottles. For more flamboyant femininity, switch up to something more voluptuous, such as full-bodied peonies

Double the drama

Create the illusion of a fuller, more lavish display by placing a tall vase of long-stemmed flowers teamed with grasses – or meandering branches of magnolia – in front of a mantelpiece mirror.  What can be lovelier than letting spring actually blossom in your home?

Pretty as a picture

Turn your bouquet into a work of art by placing your flowers in front of an empty picture frame. Whitewash an old gilt frame and place the flowers at one edge. Keep the space blank or frame a patterned textile or wallpaper. The addition of pretty, three-dimensional butterflies works beautifully with the branches of blossoms in this Nest of Posies blog post.

Rustic charm

Don’t want to overcomplicate things? For a simple, country-cottage feel, fill a galvanised bucket with an armful of English summer meadow flowers. Daisies look beautiful alone, or mixed with poppies, cornflowers and scabius.

Make a statement

Hosting a special event? For a contemporary alternative to a mantelpiece garland, fill jam jars and glass bottles of different heights, shapes and sizes with small posies along the entire length of the mantel. Stick to a colour scheme, such as whites, yellows and pinks as seen here. Go a little further by embellishing your jars and bottles with coloured ribbon or twine.
