Jo Flowers. A classical botanical beauty with a contemporary twist

The Instagram feed that’s distracting us from the daily grind and filling our heads with romantic reveries this month is that of Norfolk-based floral designer Jo Rodwell (@joflowers).

The captivating photographs of Jo’s natural but opulent floral arrangements, wildly romantic bridal bouquets and beautiful garden have a beautifully nostalgic yet fresh and contemporary feel that is utterly breathtaking.

From the delicate beauty of a single dahlia or the poetry of raindrops on a rose petal to wild and wanton bouquets of big blousy peonies and dramatic anemones, tangled up with forest foliage and sinewy branches.

With much of her stock grown in her own garden, Jo’s connection to growing began at an early age, inspired by the great gardeners in her family. But flowers haven’t always been the primary focus of Jo’s career. She began selling furniture at antique fairs where she would take along a few bunches of handpicked flowers from her garden. They sold out instantly and elicited wonderful feedback about her style. So, keen to explore this passion further, Jo trained as a professional florist and worked in a local flower shop “but found both frustratingly formal and dated” she revealed in an interview with Flowerona.

The blossoming of Jo Flowers

Seeing Jo’s natural and organic approach to flower arranging, it’s not hard to see why she eschewed the formality and limiting nature of formal floristry techniques.

So with formal training under her belt and her own inimitable style itching to be expressed, she began Jo Flowers in 2010, specialising in personal floral design for weddings and events using seasonal flowers, home-grown and foraged ingredients.

Take a peep into Jo’s home and garden and get a sense of what she’s about in this beautiful short film.
