What to do with your leftover flowers

Flowers past their prime? Don’t throw them out just yet - put them to good use!

Whether it’s being handed a beautiful bouquet by someone you love, or treating yourself to some colourful blooms to brighten up your home – fresh flowers are guaranteed to put a smile on your face.

But when your precious petals begin to wilt and fall, parting can be such sweet sorrow. Of course, there are plenty of things you can do to make your flowers last longer. But when they’re truly past their best, a little imagination is called for.

Here are few creative ideas to keep the beauty of your blooms alive…

herb-candle

Candle

Dried flowers can also be used to bring a plain white candle to life – the perfect gift for the mum who has everything. Simply arrange and stick them around the inside of a jar and gently pour in your melted wax. Don't forget the wick! Go for a loose haphazard design or treat your candle like a work of art and arrange your flowers in a more structured way. And using fragrant flowers like lavender will also make these a real treat for your senses!

Pressing flowers is a great way to preserve them – and it’s simple and fun to do. Flat-headed varieties, such as daisies and pansies work best and there are a number of methods you can use to press them – read our guide to find the best method to suit you. Once pressed, your two-dimensional petals can be framed and hung on the wall as a pretty artwork or turned into cute, homemade greetings cards.

Rose jam

If you don’t fancy the idea of putting dried flowers in a jam jar, how about putting flower jam in there, instead? Here’s a great recipe for delicious rose petal jam or, if making jam sounds a little too domesticated for your liking, you could always try mixing your own fresh flower cocktails*

soap

Dried Flower Soap

Dried flowers are the perfect addition for any skin cleansing products, not only do they add colour and fragrance to your bathroom but many flowers have great skin loving properties. This combination of marigold, honey, and oatmeal is great because the marigolds soothes, the honey moisturises, and the oatmeal exfoliates leaving you with happy and healthy skin. You can also make soap with herbs, see a step by step guide here

Dried flowers in a jar

Dried flower displays were quite the thing once upon a time – and now, thanks to our love of all things vintage, they are firmly back in vogue. To give your dried flowers a contemporary twist, pop them inside a pretty mason jar.

*Please note: It is important to only use flowers which are specifically grown for human consumption in food and beauty products.
