Why Thanksgiving is inspiring us to say ‘Thanks a bunch!’

Show your appreciation with beautiful blooms

With American communities all over the world gearing up for their annual Thanksgiving celebrations, our thoughts have turned to counting our blessings and expressing our gratitude – because while Thanksgiving might not be an official celebration for us Brits, we could all benefit from spreading a little gratitude, right?

Thanksgiving Flowers

And what better way to show your appreciation than with a beautiful bunch of flowers? Here is some inspiration...

Hydrangeas: “Thanks for understanding”

If you’ve been leaning on a friend more than usual of late, show them how much they’re appreciated with a beautiful bunch of hydrangea. The Victorians gave these voluminous blooms to say “thank you for understanding me”. Opt for a mix of dusky pink and purple hues or create a dried hydrangea arrangement for a long-lasting gift they’ll never forget.

Sweet peas: “Thanks for a lovely time!”

It’s customary in this country to turn up to a dinner party with a bottle of wine. But why not show your hosts you really appreciated their efforts by thanking them after the event with a symbolic bunch of sweet peas. According to the Victorian language of flowers, these pretty blooms say ‘thank you for a lovely time’. This could also work after an awesome date.

Roses: “Thank you just because…”

Roses aren’t just for Valentine’s Day lovers. A bouquet of roses in full bloom is also symbolic of gratitude, according to the Victorian language of flowers. So whether it’s a supportive friend, partner or family member you want to surprise, you can’t go wrong with the classic rose. Although any colour can express gratitude, you might want to steer clear of red if you want to avoid any romantic interpretation. If in doubt, opt for deep pink, which is specifically singled out as a symbol of appreciation and gratitude.

Say it with flowers

Of course, you don’t need to stick to the secret flower code of the Victorians. Create your own secret language by choosing flowers that are personally meaningful – like their favourite blooms or birth flower. You can even theme the notecard with a cheeky floral pun, like “Thanks for everything, petal!” or  “If friends were flowers, I’d pick you!” (you get the picture!).

And in the spirit of thanks, thank you to all our readers!
