While last season was all about enjoying the garden, autumn's focus is on returning indoors and creating a cosy space for yourself, ready for winter hibernation. Savour a new moment of peace curled up under a blanket with a favourite book, or indulge in a well-deserved spa session at home. Create the time for self-care in the private sanctuary of your bathroom and bedroom, and bring calm and soothing energy into these rooms through the addition of autumn flowers. Here’s how:
Counting petals at dusk
The soft petals of dahlias will encourage sweet dreams, creating a soulful atmosphere that soothes you to sleep. If you’re struggling with insomnia, instead of an app, try meditating on these beautiful blooms, and count the petals until you drift off. Or position Craspedia, Crocosmia and sunflowers near the window, so you can admire their remarkable shapes and colours in the evening light. A small vase or glass jam jar holding a couple of stems on your bedside table will create the desired effect. It’s wonderful having flowers in the bedroom: during the day they bring colour and energy, and at night they watch over you.
A similar delicate vase with striking floral arrangement will also look great in the bathroom. Small vases like these give a second chance to flowers with stems that were cut too short, or which have broken by accident. It will always be fun to have flowers to admire while you brush your teeth in the morning, and perhaps their cheery faces will take the edge off your tiredness as well. A sea of flowers
Speaking of spas, try running a hot bath, adding your favourite bath oil and floating some fresh flowers in the water for an extra special treatment. Seasonal flowers cut loose from their stems and handfuls of petals make the bathtub look very inviting. Share it with your partner, adding chocolates and a glass of bubbly, or lock yourself in with some soothing music and light a few candles for a relaxing soak.
