Say it with flowers: The best blooms to suit every occasion

The language of flowers

Whatever the occasion, you can’t go wrong with the gift of fresh flowers. But the question is – which flowers to give. Here are a few ideas to help you avoid the age-old clichés and choose something that’s meaningful and personal with a modern twist.

Birthday

Give your birthday bouquet that personalised touch by incorporating the birthday girl (or boy)’s favourite flower, or creating a seasonal bouquet themed around their favourite colour.

Wedding anniversary

Bring back happy memories of the big day by choosing the same flowers that were used at the wedding – or choose a bloom that symbolises that particular year of marriage.

Valentine’s Day

For a contemporary take on the traditional bouquet of red roses with obligatory gypsophela, opt for two-dozen scarlet tulips. Simple but striking.

Mother’s Day

Carnations are the traditional Mother’s Day flowers but if you want to brighten up her day, you can’t go wrong with a colourful bunch of roses in a mix of eye-popping shades.

Easter

It’s the holiday that heralds the arrival of spring so celebrate with seasonal blooms in candy colours. Take your pick from tulips, daffodils, hyacinths, ranunculus and beautiful voluminous peonies.

Father’s Day

The modern dad knows full well that flowers aren’t just for women. But if the father in your life is a little, shall we say, ‘traditional’, you might be wise to steer clear of delicate, pastel blooms and opt for a ‘power’ arrangement that’s bold and striking, such as a tropical arrangement of king’s protea and bird of paradise (and don’t forget the palm leaves).

Halloween

Going to a Halloween party? Impress your hosts with a bouquet of spooky-themed flowers, like Chinese lanterns, black dahlias and DIY glow-in-the-dark roses.

Christmas

The Poinsettia is the traditional Christmas gift but why not get creative this year with your own bouquets of festive-inspired flowers, such as ‘snowball’ chrysanthemums, snowflake-like paperwhites and branches of winterberries.

New baby

If you want to avoid the old gender stereotypes of blue for a boy and pink for a girl, why not welcome their little ray of sunshine with a bunch of sunflowers?
