3 ways to bring autumn colour into your home

Welcome the new season palette

Colourful flower displays are by no means the preserve of the sunnier months. Autumn offers a rich and varied palette of beautiful shades from the duskiest purple to the brightest flaming orange.

So inject a shot of seasonal colour into your home with some vibrant autumnal displays: the perfect antidote to those long, dark evenings.

Dusky (the new pastel)

The vibe: Spring’s candy pastels take on a deeper, sultrier hue in the autumn months. Mix the season’s palette of dusky pinks and purples and delicate creamy whites with a smattering of white berries and some ‘frosted’ foliage for a rustic look that evokes those cool, crisp mornings when the landscape shimmers in the mist as the low sun catches on the dawn frosts.

The flowers: Think antique roses in dusky pinks and creams, beautifully rustic hydrangea in faded shades of mauve, lavender and silver-tinged eucalyptus leaves and branches of snowberries.

The home: This vintage-style arrangement would look beautiful in a bedroom, displayed in an enamel pitcher on a chest of drawers or dressing table.

TIP: Try drying your hydrangea for a look that will take you right the way through to spring.

The vibe: Spring might be the season when trees come alive with blossoms and gardens burst into bloom but the fiery landscape of autumn’s turning leaves is no less spectacular. Evoke the season’s beauty with an autumnal arrangement of warm, rich, spicy tones from golden and burnt orange to deep blood red.

The flowers: Mix apricot roses and orange calla lilies with burnt russet chrysanthemums and blood red dahlias. Finish with some sinewy branches to add drama and dynamism.

The home: This fiery display would make a fabulous statement in an empty hearth, on an occasional table in the hall or as a spectacular dining table centrepiece.

The vibe: If dusky, muted and warm tones aren’t your thing, and you’re missing the colour popping shades of summer, fear not. Autumn’s brights are about vivid jewel-like tones. Take your pick from emerald greens, sapphire blues and deep ruby reds. Create your own multicoloured arrangement – and don’t be afraid to mix things up.

The flowers: Choose from dramatic, ruby red king’s protea, golden balls of crespedia, brightly coloured heather in vibrant lilacs, hot pinks and lime and mint greens, multicoloured alstroemeria and violet, fuschia and sapphire snapdragons.

The home: Bring a riot of colour into your living space by displaying your jewel-toned arrangement on a sideboard or coffee table. Or create a smaller version to brighten up a dimly lit bathroom.
