The flower circle of life

Azuma Makoto’s latest flower project: ‘Back to the earth’

Flower lovers know that, even with the greatest care and attention, a blossoming bunch of flowers can sometimes start to droop. This wilting process can be mesmerizing. There is beauty in the decay. That is what flower artist Azuma Makoto believes and in his latest work ‘Back to earth’ he reveals the (flower) circle of life.

Time lapse on repeat

Tens of thousands of colourful flowers were arranged in big four meter circle and recorded between May and June 2017. This took place in Saitama in Japan. You can see the results in the time lapse film which Azuma Makoto has shared on his Instagram page. What begins as a colourful, eye-catching circle arranged on grass, ends up with a scene where nothing appears to have happened.

Life and death

All the stages of decomposition have their own charm, colour and feel.  Azuma Makoto: “Life and death exist side by side.  We have been able to capture all stages of life in this documentary.” What do you think about this flower project?
