Style Trends Watch 2017

Bring the hottest style trends into your home

As the UK starts coming alive with colour and greenery, we’re looking for ways to bring the beauty of the world outside into our own home.

In 2017, the style trends we can expect to see are split into 4 categories; Harmonise, Equalise, Energise and Rebel. To help you bring these trends to life in your own home, we’ve rounded them up with some examples of flowers and plants you can use to match the style.

Harmonise

As the world becomes ever more complex and less transparent, more and more people are moving back to their roots to feel at one with the outdoor world. This is why we’re making spaces in which we can retreat into and get away from the hustle and bustle. Think of creating open spaces that bring a sense of tranquillity, and fill it with plants and flowers that help stimulate the senses through scent and soothing colours that are easy on the eye.  Integrate natural products such as petals, herbs and stones, to create ornaments and statement home pieces that fit with that naturally serene feeling.

Flower: Freesia

Look out for fresh and delicate flowers and plants with a rustic look and strong symbolic value. For example, Freesias are great flowers for this as they symbolise unconditional love and innocence.

Kalanchoe Beharensis are also well suited as their calming shades of green bring a welcomed softness to any space.

Equalise

Bringing the natural and manmade world together in beautiful synchronisation can be a complex task, but we like to look at how the most unusual of pairings can work together, to help equalise your home.

Blend living and inanimate materials in an alternate, eye-catching way. Use greenery to infuse nature into more drab and impersonal settings, whether it’s an indoor tree taking over the corner of the house or something growing up your brick work. You can also pair rugged plants with soft floral materials, or vice versa, to create synergy between the seemingly opposite.

Flower: Alstromeria (aka Kangaroo Paw)

Look for flowers and plants that are both robust and rugged, and delicate and decorative. Try placing flowers where you wouldn’t expect them, or pairing them with stark backgrounds. Use a combination of bold and soft colours which are varied and energetic. Anigozanthos (commonly known as Kangaroo Paw because of its unusual flowers which resemble the paws of the Aussie animal) also fit well and can be placed outdoors in the spring/summer months.

Energise

Energy indicates vigour and strength. It makes us feel fit and ready for what life has to throw at us. Replicate this energy with flowers by blending shades and combining strong foliage with sturdy flower shapes in homes, gardens, balconies and windowsills, creating spaces that are relaxed, but simultaneously full of life. After all, plants are our personal oxygen factories and air purifiers, so they are perfect for bringing energy and freshness inside the home.

Flower: Dahlia

Strong sleek shapes in fresh green or other bold colours paired with faded shades of the same colours brings real vibrancy to a room. Bouquet shapes associated with sports (e.g. wreathes and rosettes) or pieces that contain playful elements are also great at giving off those energetic vibes. Dahlias echo sporty attributes with their eye-catching petals that can be evenly coloured, but are often noticeably bright with spots or lines.

Rebel

We all need a chance to relax and forget the rules for a while, and we’re seeing this really come through with how people are using flowers and plants. Place them in unusual places, or use off the wall pots and vases to create a look and feel that suits your personality and home. Remember, anything is possible and nothing is right or wrong!

Flower: Gerbera

With our lives constantly on the go, sometimes we need to take our mind off everything for a while and using plants and flowers with eye catching shapes and bold, playful colours is a great place to start. Choose exotic materials and unexpected combinations to achieve a sleek, artistic feel to your space. The popular, colourful Gerbera brings positivity with its wide variety of quirky petal forms, from ‘spaghetti’ to ‘spider’.
