A summer party

When you  think of summer, do you see the Hydrangea before your eyes? This rich blooming summer bloom is available in amazing colours from bright white to deep blue, heavenly pink, scarlet, lilac and vintage green with blushing rims. All that natural beauty can inspire a stunning floral arrangement, even artists. Part of Paris recently blossomed artistically thanks to the Hydrangea, with a bit of help from enthusiastic fans and a lot of colourful paper sheets.

Happy days

For the collective street art piece ‘l’Artensia’ (l’Art de l’Hortensia’) French artist Mademoiselle Maurice asked local residents and passers-by the same question: ‘What does Hydrangea make you think of?’ Many people participated and the outcome was both beautiful and emotional. The beauty evoked many happy and poetic descriptions like ‘Sweet summer dream’, ‘Sense of a rich heart’ and even ‘A smile of flowers’.

Hydrangeami!

Over 400 participants wrote their impressions on a sheet of coloured paper that Mademoiselle Maurice then folded into a Hydrangea flower, origami-style. ‘With my origami I try to bring a positive vibe in urban areas all over the world,’ she says. ‘Just like flowers do. Both the Hydrangea and origami are originally from Japan, so that seemed appropriate. Also, the Hydrangea has an artistic outline that translates well into origami.’ Together, the folded flowers created a delightful and meaningful piece of community art on the Quai de Valmy, in the trendy 10th arrondissement. Many people checked out both the real and the origami flowers, and all the lovely things written in their hearts.
