Exposé #14: Azuma Makoto

We’re proud to present Exposé, a series of portraits in which we introduce you to remarkable trend-setters who are involved with flowers and/or plants. Exposé 2017 starts with something very special, since the focus of Exposé #14 is on Azuma Makoto, flower artist from Tokyo, Japan.

Azuma is not just a flower artist at studio AMKK, but also a businessman and owner of the flower shop Jardin des Fleurs. The common theme in everything he does is his love for flowers. And that runs very deep. He doesn’t just put flowers at the heart of his work: he worships them, does everything to show off their ultimate beauty and creates the perfect conditions for doing this.

Azuma Makoto’s work

As an artist he doesn’t just produce work independently, but also collaborates regularly with fashion designers, photographers and perfume houses. Azuma’s work has included ice sculptures with flowers for Dries Van Noten’s presentation of the 2017 summer collection, and the fabulous book Encyclopedia of Flowers in conjunction with Shunsuke Shiinoki. Part three has just been published. If you’d like to find out more about this remarkable man, you can read more about his background, motivation and immense love for flowers in this interview.
